One Shoe

October 31, 2008

This week, I edited pictures from Jen & Mike’s engagement & stumbled across this photo I took at the beach:

Now, you may think I’m slightly off kilter for taking a picture of just a lonely old shoe laying half buried in the sand.  But as it just so happens, this shoe is quite important.  I stumbled across this picture the same week that I received an email from an organization I volunteer with, Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep with a request for stories as they are possibly being featured in Newsweek.  It also comes to me in October, the month I did my first NILMDTS session for a beautiful young couple in Alabama for their precious baby Nathan.  It’s funny how life has a way of bringing things to you in a truly roundabout way.

I found out about NILMDTS through a close friend, who like me – is one of those crazy activist types.  One of my crazy activist obsessions is mothers & babies.  I’ve always taken a keen interest in the unique bond that exists between a mother and her child, and how important and sacred that bond is – it’s the very thing that led me to re-explore photography, and has driven so many of my choices in life, particularly in recent years.  I can’t help but think that what happens between a mother & child and to mothers & children is quite possibly one of the biggest issues in the world, and is responsible in some way shape or form for all things in this world.  I have always held a deep belief that babies need mothers like they need the air they breathe, and that how we bring our children into this world is as important as how we raise our children in this world.  It’s also what caused me to be involved in an organization called BOLD (Birth On Labor Day), which wrapped up just one month before my first NILMDTS last October.  Another odd way of coming full-circle with my own deep rooted passions.

Anyways, I am rambling on about all of this for a reason.  Not only do I think it’s important that I recognize beautiful baby Nathan, who I photographed on the day of his birth, and unfortunately also the day he left Earth, but I also wanted to give my own little recognition to baby Noah.  Not so long ago I photographed baby Noah – also on the day of his birth, which was also the day he left this Earth.  I can’t help but feel a strong tug in my heart for both sets of parents.  And wouldn’t you know, Noah’s daddy is a photographer.  His parents are those cool, eclectic parents we all wish we had growing up.  They lost nearly everything in Ivan, and through a series of events, ended up travelling the country in a motorhome, taking pictures of old lonely shoes.  Ok, so it’s really much more than that, and he explains it much more eloquently HERE, at his website called The One Shoe Diaries.  He also has a book, which is out & which I keep meaning to buy.  He also keeps a blog, much more faithfully than myself.  So if you’re ever looking for a place to read, and can’t rely on me to get with the program, check him out!  I’m adding him to my blogroll so you can always find him!  Anyways, it’s really neat, and now I find myself seeing lone shoes everywhere, although I never seemed to remember seeing them before.  Or perhaps I just never noticed.  It’s quite a phenomenon though!

So anyways – there’s my conribution to the One Shoe Diaries.  Ok, probably not *really* a contribution, but I will submit the image (they have a place where you can submit one by the way).

So this month, October (which is nearly over, my goodness!), is quite a month for me.  The birth of my daughter in ’06, the wrap up of BOLD in ’07, my first NILMDTS session in ’07, and here I am with the news of the Newsweek publication, and this picture of a lone shoe, reminding me very powerfully of little baby Noah and Nathan.

Bless you, Noah & Nathan… those small footprints of yours left big impressions on this world 🙂

Phillips-Purchell Wedding

October 30, 2008

I’m excited to put this one up, not only because it means I’m making headway in this game of catch-up, but also because I really like a lot of the “little things” about this wedding.  Let’s face it – I see a lot of weddings, but I don’t always get as many neat little surprises as with this one.  It was one of those weddings where things just kind of perfectly aligned for some really neat pictures.  The day, like any other wedding day, was hectic… but it was really nice to see Aaron & Markie embark on a new life together.  I did their engagement shots, so I knew going into it that Aaron would be cool as a cucumber, and just happy as a clam to be marrying Markie – he’s clearly smitten.  It reminded me why I really love shooting weddings!

So enough of my incessant need to babble, and on with the preview!  Let’s go in chronological order, shall we?  Here’s a preview of Markie & Aaron’s big day, they drove all the way from Atlanta down here to get married at Crystal Beach just out past Destin!

Ok, wait… shameless plug for my most favoritest cake-baker ever, Belinda at Creative Celebrations.  This was an absolutely beautiful cake… and although I’m not usually a huge fan of fondant, hers isn’t too shabby.  Actually, it’s dare I say GOOD!  And, she’s awesomely creative – those flowers – FONDANT! The seashells, YUMMY shimmery chocolate!

And this was one of the neat little surprises of the day… someone (just a passerby I suppose) made this sandcastle just for Markie & Aaron between the arch & the reception tent on the beach.

And I couldn’t resist these pictures.  This ring is ROCKING.  Diamonds are, after all, a girl’s best friend!

And wasn’t this the coolest idea?!  See what I mean… neat surprises!  A photographer’s dream come true!

And just one more…

So, thanks a bunch to Markie & Aaron for letting me be a part of such a special day.

Mike & Jennifer’s Engagement

October 30, 2008

I love doing engagement shoots.  Perhaps even more than weddings.  I love the fast upbeat pace of a wedding, but I especially love watching the early romance in engagement pictures.  It’s always fun to think back about how *I* was once giddy over my own husband.  Then I come home from the engagement shoot, fondly dreaming of days gone by – to dirty dishes in the sink & 2 screaming kids … ah well – married life (not to discourage anyone lol).

Boy, I always have a tendancy to side-track, don’t I?!  Ok, enough enough.  Jennifer & Mike!  The cutest darn couple!  We had a blast out in Rosemary Beach – another really gorgeous day!  So here’s a sneak peek of their engagement shoot, and again – pardon the plethora of pictures – I had trouble choosing again!  (Click on the flickr Roll to see more!).

I love this picture – I told them to cuddle on the bench like they would at home.  They immediately fell into this pose:

Apparantly, Mike has a weakness (besides Jennifer): his scalp.

And because wherever I go, I somehow manage to get strange animals creeping into my pictures:
(And just wait – there’s more further down!)

And before you think *I’m* the goofy one, apparantly Mike has a creative streak in him!  He proposed with a Ring Pop!  (I find it very sweet, my own husband proposed with a wooden ring before proposing with the real thing!)

My most favoritest hill around, in Alys Beach (Ok, so there aren’t a lot of hills anywhere around, but this one is still fun!):

And finally – “One for the road”…

And yes, I promised one last critter… and here he is:

I love it when I find cool ones, with the pretty pink part!

Ok, that’s enough for now… Until next time!

Dion & Leavins Wedding

October 29, 2008

Here’s a long overdue sneak peek for Jen & Shane!

Jen & Shane got married in Crestview, Florida at the First United Methodist Church & wrapped the night up with a fun & heartfelt reception (with a tear-jerking speech by Jen’s sister and a great speech by Shane’s brother as well, by the way) at the Foxwood Country Club.

Anyways, enough of my talking & let’s get on with the pictures… and pardon the excess, but I just couldn’t narrow down my favorites any more, and there are still plenty more that I would have included, except the pressure to get them all up into a gallery is killing me so time is of the essence!

First though, a picture of the church & the beautiful blue skies.  I find this kind of funny & ironic because we actually had pretty gloomy weather for part of the day – but you’d never know it by these pictures!  Well, they say rain is good luck, so at least they had a little good luck showers & some blue beautiful skies to shine down on them!

And here are some more of those blue skies, almost opening up for Jen & Shane!

I love this picture… Jen is so laid back & to me, this is so her:

And this is probably my second favorite,
Jen has such a natural beauty, it makes me envious!

Ok, that’s all for now – I’ve got some editing to get cracking on!

October 21, 2008

Ok, here’s a little sneak peek of Mindy & her new husband!  These were done at the park that they got married at, so it holds quite a bit of sentimental value – then we headed over to the beach for a romp in the sand & surf!

I have to say, they were both a LOT of fun, and they kept things lively.  There wasn’t a single dull moment!  So… here’s a little sneak preview of what’s to come… (and if these first two pictures don’t give you an idea of how much fun we had, then you can see how much fun *they* had in the last few!).

Ok, that’s all for now, more coming tomorrow!

October 21, 2008

By the way, I’ve had an issue in recent weeks with emails.  And apparantly I’m still having the issue sporadically.  If you’ve sent me an email, and gotten no response, it’s apparantly because the response is clogged up in my Outbox & my mail server is having trouble sending it.  I’m also having trouble getting *some* emails – again, it seems to be random.

So if you’re one of those, having that problem, then post a comment here… and I can try to email you from my personal account!  I’m working out the mail issue, so bear with me!

Britney’s Senior Photos & an Update

October 21, 2008

Really quick – Sneak Peeks (that I’m behind on) are coming up Tonight & Tomorrow night!  So keep an eye out, and be prepared to dig through 7, 8, 9, maybe even 10 previews for yours!  They were all supposed to go up this weekend, until our littlest one, who had been sick – got a pretty bad reaction to something – still no idea what.  She’s head to toe in hives & swollen up like a balloon, but finally getting better.  I’ll spare you all the gory details, but things are finally moving along & back on track!

Anyways – here’s one of the sneak peeks, Britney!  Britney was a pretty awesome Senior – who has an eery resemblance to my little sister, Katie (Katie, are you seeing this?!).

Anyways – this preview will hopefully make it’s way to her dad, Troy – who is currently overseas in the Middle East.  Unfortunately, he’s missing his daughter’s senior year, so hopefully this helps him to share a little piece of it.

And so first, a picture of Britney & her mom:

And that’s all for now, I’m off to catch up on editing & a million other things so be on the lookout for all the other sneak previews tonight & tomorrow night!

Take care!
